The Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest in the United States and draws thousands of people into the city every year. The parade typically takes place the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day and runs through downtown along Grant Street and the Boulevard of the Allies.

Expect marching bands, Irish dancers, bagpipe groups, police and fire units, and a lot of Pittsburgh pride. Families usually arrive early to get a good spot, and the energy in the city starts building long before the parade begins.

After the parade, most of the crowd heads toward Market Square, the Cultural District, and the Strip District to continue the celebration.

Popular areas to celebrate include

  • Market Square

  • Station Square

  • Strip District

These areas are perfect if you want the full St. Patrick’s Day experience, but keep in mind that crowds get much larger as the afternoon goes on.
